EXCERPT: “Baby
Wants Candy is a superb, wholly improvised, musical show.”
Review by Imogen Sarre
Baby Wants Candy is a superb,
wholly improvised, musical show. The rather contentious title of ‘Hitler and
the Tooth Fairy’ was shouted out by an audience member (who received a
personalised t-shirt in thanks at the end of the set) and the cast of five took
it from there, developing an astonishingly well structured production, complete
with plot, sub-plotlines, an array of characters, different sorts of scenes,
and wonderful feel good tunes, as well as a great deal of wit and comedy.
With such a potentially awkward
title, I was especially impressed with how well they all dealt with the tricky
subject, never alienating its audience whilst not shying away from Hitler’s
despotism and racism. Not only that, they also managed to make the musical
extremely funny and feel-good, getting the audience clapping along. The cast
and band were astonishingly talented and I could definitely see how each of the
actors fulfilled different roles in the plot’s construction. There was no off
or on-stage communication between them, yet somehow the scene transitions were
slick, didn’t drag, and new ideas seamlessly developed into songs.
Everyone – cast, band, and
audience – got totally stuck in and really had a ball. A wonderful evening and,
had I been at the Festival for longer, one I would definitely have forked out again.
And probably again.
Baby Wants Candy: The Completely Improvised Full Band Musical was shown at Assembly, George Square, at the Edinburgh Festival 2012. To find out more about this production, please go to the Ed Fringe website.
